Announcing: GrowCookEat

Spring is here and my garden is getting started. I had such a good experience last year with growing a backyard garden, not just in terms of a great yield for a first timer, but it was a great teaching tool for my kids and the whole family enjoyed working on it. It taught Logan, my now 5 year old, about different vegetables and herbs and what they look like and how some plants die in the winter (annuals) and some come back every year (perennials). I have been so anxious for it to warm up so we could get started again.

growcookeeat2

This year I want to share that experience with all of you. Not just through my posts, but through your experiences too. I am announcing a new weekly feature here on goodLife {eats} called GrowCookEat.

My plan is to do my usual gardening posts like last year, share recipes geared towards from "garden to table," guest posts from readers and other bloggers participating (especially those who are seasoned gardeners and can share tips), and interviews or Q&A's with horticulturalists about gardening and cooking in season. Today's post is just the introduction, but each Friday I'll have a new post to share with you, be it a recipe, a Q&A, or a guest post. And maybe even some surprise giveaways!

Here’s how to participate in GrowCookEat:

1. If you are so inclined to write a post about gardening on your own blog for that week's feature, please mention www.goodlifeeats and GrowCookEat so that your readers know where they can learn more about gardening. This way we can all share and learn together. Then, come back here to add the link to your post to the SimplyLinked form below.

2. If you don’t have a blog, simply tell us about your garden in comments section of each post so we can all see what you're up to.

3. Let's stay on topic, this isn't an invitation to spam everyone with your blog. If your post doesn't somehow relate to gardening, it will be deleted. Thanks for understanding.

  20. I have a square foot garden, a 4x8' raised bed. I may have planted everything prematurely this year, but we had one very warm week and I was so excited I couldn't wait. I also planted 4 tomatoes in large pots, also probably way too early.

  21. My husband & I started a garden this year. Something we've always wanted to do! So far, we've harvested strawberries, lettuce, carrots, and peas. Last weekend we planted tomatoes, cucumbers, jalepenos, yellow & red peppers, eggplant, zucchini, acorn squash, and corn! We've also got lots of herbs ready to plant this weekend. Our goal is to have 25% of our veggies be organic from our backyard or our CSA (which we joined for the first time this past winter). I'd say we are already at 75% as I rarely have to buy veggies from the grocery store these days.

  22. Awesome idea, Katie! Gardening is such a great idea. It's fulfilling and satisfying work, and produces great food that tastes better than anything you can buy at the store. Plus it teaches self-reliance, even if it is just a few tomatoes or squash. This year we won't be planting on our porch like we usually do, since we'll be in the middle of the move. But you can bet that we will plant like crazy when we get to San Diego and all that lovely weather! I'm going to plant herbs, especially basil, on our new porch, and there is a community garden that I'd like to participate in.

  23. This season will be our 5th at planting vegetables. Each year we have fun selecting new items to add to the old standbys like tomatoes/cucumbers/onions/hot peppers. Some are flops (like the corn/pumpkin/watermelon from last year) and some have become new favorites (sugar snap peas/basil/mixed greens/broccoli). My husband built 3 raised beds and 3 large planters so I am able to plant quite a bit. I grew up in a very urban area and longed to garden...now that I can...so looking forward to sharing this with my 2 little boys as they grow!

  26. The broccoli seedlings are just about reading for transplanting, the basil babies are doing great, and my mint has resurrected itself. I am planning on doing some lettuce, spinach, tomatoes, summer squash, and maybe some berry bushes if we can learn more about them! We bought a house last August and finally have space for a proper garden, but apartment dwellers: just try potted plants! They'll do great too!

  39. I never feel comfortable writing about it, because it's not MY garden (it's my husband's truelove, and is the product of his effort and care), but we have a little patio. On that patio, we have a Meyer lemon tree, a lime tree, a tangerine tree and an avocado tree, a blueberry bush, a pepper plant, rosemary, mint, basil, thyme, sage, chervil and sorrel. I want tomatoes again this summer. He tells me there isn't room. I tell him that we don't need a potted palm when we could have tomatoes. It's an ongoing discussion.

  96. I'm container gardening. I've already got lettuce and spinach as well as argula planted. My three strawberry plants came back and even gave me some runners. The blueberries (except for one latebloomer who I almost thought died have leaves and one of my raspberry bushes made it,the other died.:( I also got my thyme, oregano, chives(these things never die) and lavender back. I had to replant mint, cilantro(of course),and rosemary(I just can't seem to win with rosemary).

I still have to get maters and peppers going as well as some basil. I'd love to know some companion plants for a cucumber plant because every year I plant them the squash bugs get em' before I do. I also will likely plant some green beans. I'm kinda scared but I might try my hand at canning.

  108. Katie,
My husband and I love gardening. We are on our 3rd year having a real garden. Last year we went hog wild and planted more veggie types than you can count on 4 hands. We discovered quickly what doesn't grow well in our climate. This year our veggie garden has been cut way back - only 15 tomato plants. But I am excited to say I am planting my first heirloom tomato - Brandywine - I hope its as amazing as I hear. We are doing 2 varieties of lettuce and 1 spinach, 3 types of beans, 3 types of peppers, and only 1 type of cucumbers.
My flower garden is a whole other issue - I may go broke there. :)

May I recommend a book? I love "The $64 Tomato: How One Man Nearly Lost His Sanity, Spent a Fortune, and Endured an Existential Crisis in the Quest for the Perfect Garden" by William Alexander.

Also, I have you listed on my private gardening blog (blog is just for family members)... they love your recipes!

    Thanks Katie!
    Love,
    Laurel (your former roommate)

  119. We have yet to decide what we are planting (other than tomatoes) but my husband built us a raised bed the other weekend. My 3 3/4 year old keeps wanting to hoe the soil - he can't wait for stuff to grow. Last year we had tomatoes in pots and he LOVED grabbing one off the vine and eating it.

  120. I'm in a condo with a small porch, but have gardened there every year. EarthBoxes are wonderful (self-watering planters, big enough for 2-3 tomato plants!). This year for the first time I'm growing plants from seed. I started late, so my seedlings are still pretty small (the biggest is about 4 inches and slimmer-than-a-pencil stem - it's a tomato). Still, should work.

I'm growing 5 different kinds of tomatoes this year - all heirlooms. Also (from seed) basil, parsley (if it works - they look awful), and marigolds.

Last year's parsley, which I planted from seed directly into the EarthBox, did basically nothing all year. It had two little stems when I pulled out my tomatoes, so I left it to see if it would grow. It survived the (normally mild) winter, and recently (February or so) decided it was time to grow! It's now about 16" in diameter and 8" tall. That is, that's how big it was until last Tuesday, when I harvested most of the lower stems (now it's about 8"x8") to make spaghetti with white clam sauce. My mom contributed basil (a pot bought from Trader Joe's) and cilantro (her plant did about what my parsley did this year). It was absolutely delicious - much richer and more flavorful than the usual made from supermarket parsley and basil!

  123. We do a garden every year! Last year we planted entirely too many okra plants and couldn't keep up. Even the neighbors ran we they saw us walking over to give away the bounty. Scaling back this year but trying some new things as well. Look forward to the post.

  127. Wow what an awesome idea! I'm a college student, and I'll be living on campus this summer. Last weekend I helped set up our very first campus community garden, and I already have a spot reserved for my amazing roommie and myself. It's such a huge step towards sustainability on my campus, and we are looking forward to learning the ins and out of gardening..and maybe even canning! I'm looking forward to a great summer.

  129. We just moved from PA to FL and will be gardening in the midwest for the first time! I've always been jealous of my aunt's garden in WI, and can't wait to try it out. Hoping to try out canning for the first time, but the most exciting part will be growing some veggies to make into homemade baby food for little girl.

  134. We will have a large garden. My husband is the landscape manager at the 160 acre farm that Oprah used to own, in Indiana. He always plants lots of great veggies. I still have zucchini in the freezer. Guess I better get baking with it before the new harvest comes :-)
    Thanks for the great giveaway!

  136. Hello!
My fiance and I just started a small back yard veggie and fruit garden about a month or so ago. we've been successful in the past at growing herbs like mint, basil, etc. so we decided to take the leap. after a lot of hard work we ended up with five raised beds (3 large, 2 small) and a few large pots inside a gated area. We're just starting to see some tomatoes and peppers coming in. We are all for Grow Cook Eat 2010!

  137. currently we are planning a community garden. it will be 1000 sq ft that all of our neighbors will work to produce approximately 1000-1500 pounds of food for the area. our immediate neighbors are in a food desert and many of them buy their groceries at convenience stores or fast food places. our hope is to provide the area with healthy food from the area and also have workshops to teach us how to prepare and preserve the food. we are going to attempt to do an organic garden using permaculture principles. we have a few experience gardeners leading the way, but most of us, like myself, are inexperienced. i'm very excited about working with the community to feed our community.

  138. I absolutely love this idea. Growing our own food and using it on our table is a personal passion of mine, and I'm anxious to be able to grow a garden of our own again (we're in a transition stage right now and don't have the ability to grow our *own* garden, but thankfully access to two family gardens which we have great hopes will help to provide for a lot of our produce this summer and fall) Right now we're eating beans and fruit that I canned this summer past, and it is a reminder time and time again of the beauty of growing and putting fresh and local foods in our meals every day whenever we can.

I tend to lean towards an organic gardening approach-- feed the soil and the soil will feed you. Niel Kinsey's "Hand's On Agronomy" really, really has a lot of good stuff in there, but it's deep. :)

Squash, carrots, banana and jalapeno peppers, tomatoes, cucumbers, radishes, and spinach are on the menu. And anything else we can fit!
