Kitchen Essentials

Curious what my kitchen essentials are? Well, now you can find out! While I know I can't say what would be best for every kitchen because different folks have different cooking styles, kitchen sizes, and needs, but I can tell you what I consider my kitchen essentials, the very bare bones of what I use most regularly and could not part with if I suddenly had to downsize.

  1. Definitely a mallet for tenderizing meat, but it also doubles as a way to crush nuts. A good sturdy heat-proof rubber scraper. Scoops in various sizes from very small (like #60 or #80) to medium (about a #20). A good ceramic citrus press. A silicon grip for opening jars. Several different whisks, including a flat one for getting at the bottom of a pot or bowl. A hand held mixer AND a sturdy K5. One good heavy wooden cutting board. One good serrated knife. Metal skewers for the grill (no soaking needed) A tweezers for pin bones in fish. A stovetop grill pan. A microplane grater AND a channel knife. Digital thermometer. Immersion blender. Pots, pans and bowls are inherent. These are just the extras that I use over and over again.

  2. Wow, I'm really wracking my brains for what I need. I took to carrying my own frying pan while using those hotels that included a stovetop. Water-tight containers are a given. Basic eating utensils, a good knife, a spoon you can use with the stove.

I think the only thing that is possible to live without, yet I get annoyed without one, is a microwave. (I'm assuming that you don't live long without a stove or a firepit, not if you're cooking your own food at all.) I'm also assuming that if there's a cooking appliance, you have a few vessels or plates that will work with it.

  3. Well, I know it's not on everyone's list, but I'm a big believer in the waffle iron.

  5. LOVE the picture of your measuring spoons. I'll have to direct my brother's fiance to your article because she's getting ready to start registering for her wedding and wants tips on what to buy for her kitchen

  6. Your photography is rockin' Katie!!!

My microplane has easily become one of my more regular used kitchen gadgets this past year - I could do without out it, but I wouldn't want to.
